The best contemporary bothy experiences to book in scotland this autumn

In the last 5 years, Google searches for the term “bothy” have doubled, demonstrating an increased interest in this alternative form of accommodation.

Traditionally speaking, a bothy is a remote, abandoned building used by travellers in need of shelter. The Mountain Bothy Association likens bothies to “camping without a tent”, reminding visitors to “assume that there will be no facilities. No tap, no sink, no beds, no lights, and, even if there is a fireplace, perhaps nothing to burn.”

The contemporary bothy is far removed from the desolate outdoor living quarters that first gained popularity among hillwalkers. While retaining its remote location, natural surroundings and minimalist style, the modern bothy offers guests rough luxury, with private accommodation and maintained facilities.

Here is a round-up of the best contemporary bothy experiences in Scotland to book this autumn.

Brucefield Estate’s Tod Bothy

Brucefield Estate

We cannot share the best modern bothies in Scotland without referencing our three eco bothies, or ‘Schenbothies’, as we endear them. Opened in August of this year, our ‘Tiny Homes’, Tod, Brock and Mertrick, are ideal for visitors looking to unplug, relax and recharge in complete tranquillity.

Built from sustainable Scottish timber, the bothies complement the woodlands and forest in which they are nestled. High-quality insulating materials, triple-glazed windows and a fabric-first approach ensure minimal use of mechanical or electrical services, all the while keeping the bothy warmer than the average UK home!

Guests can enjoy views of the wild meadows from the private deck and observe the night sky through large south-facing windows. Each bothy benefits from a cosy sleeping gallery, with sustainably made duvets that mimic the warmth and feel of down; a fully functional modern bathroom; stylish kitchen space with hob, oven and fridge; a Danish Morso woodburning stove and loveseat sofa with snug skyeskns sheepskin. Outside, an open fire pit is perfect for spending long nights roasting dinner or toasting marshmallows.

Designed for those seeking a chance to slow down and disconnect, our bothies provide a retreat within the stunning countryside with limited WiFi and digital distraction. And it’s not just humans who can enjoy the tranquility of bothy life - dogs are welcome in the Mertrick bothy too!

Brock Bothy

Inverlonan

Accessible only by boat, buggy or foot, Inverlonan offers three highly secluded bothies in Argyll and Bute. With a strong emphasis on slow living, Inverlonan encourages guests to get back to basics and immerse themselves in the wild surroundings.

All bothies have a private deck, eco-toilet, and outdoor shower, plus an outdoor fire pit and pizza oven. A lochside wood-burning sauna is available for half-day rental, and a variety of dining options can be arranged.

Burnhead Bothy

Located on a working farm, Burnhead Bothy is a beautiful rural retreat in the Kilsyth hills. The cabin, which is made from sustainable timber, can accommodate up to four guests. Described as “luxury glamping at its best”, Burnhead Bothy has a fully equipped kitchen, dining and living area, bathroom and sleeping space. Guests can spend time outside on the large deck which spans two sides of the building.

Designed for those seeking a completely analogue experience, the bothy is devoid of power sockets or WiFI. Solar panels provide enough electricity to power low voltage lighting and USB charger points can be used to charge a mobile or laptop.

Burnhead Bothy

Nether Glenny Bothy

An off-grid location with no TV or WiFi, the Nether Glenny Bothy is ideal for visitors seeking out complete escapism. Nestled in the Menteith hills, with only highland cows for neighbours, the bothy offers plenty of opportunities to hike and walk.

In addition to the quirky kitchen, cosy living space and king-size bed, the Nether Glenny Bothy also boasts a Hikki hot tub, wood-fired stove oven and Hikki fire pit.

As many of us seek a break from fast-paced urban lives, interest in alternative, off-grid accommodation grows. For minimalist, remote getaways that serve to rejuvenate and restore, the Scottish modern bothy is an excellent choice this autumn.
