The best eco-accommodation in Scotland

Bookings for eco-accommodation have increased dramatically over the last few years as many of us look to play our part in reducing our impact on climate change. Opting for a sustainable holiday allows us to enjoy ourselves, without harming the planet.

For those of you looking north of the border for your next sustainable escape, look no further than these incredible lodges and eco-friendly cottages in Scotland.

Brucefield Estate, Clackmannanshire

Slackbrae, Brucefield Estate

We couldn’t write a blog about fantastic eco-accommodation in Scotland without mentioning our newly renovated forester’s cottage, the wonderful Slackbrae – located just an hour away from Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Using sustainable materials to facilitate greater energy efficiency, alongside breathable wall insulation and mechanical ventilation heat recovery, Slackbrae is the sustainable choice for your next Scottish holiday.

Most of our food is locally sourced from nearby producers and farms, and you can find an array of herbs to season your dishes in Slackbrae’s private garden. Sourcing food as locally as possible reduces food miles and therefore your meal’s environmental impact.

Our 10-year Wildlife Plan seeks to protect and nurture the plethora of plants and animals that reside on the estate’s woodlands. During your stay you can learn how to conduct a pollinator assessment, plant a tree, and even build a solitary bee house, contributing to our mission to help safeguard the area’s native flora and fauna.

Pinewood Steading, The Highlands

Based in the Scottish Highlands near Loch Ness, Pinewood Steading offers a peaceful getaway for anyone looking to escape the city.

A “super-insulated” house, Pinewood Steading uses energy to heat water, which is then distributed between the underfloor heating and hot water. The owners have taken actions to ensure minimal waste, including leaving out re-usable shopping bags and using their own trees to provide wood for the wood burner.

Set in acres of wooded and moorland grounds, the traditional farm steading is an ideal escape for any eco-conscious holidaymaker.

The Cabin, Isle of Skye

The Cabin

Located on the beautiful Isle of Skye, The Cabin is a delightful lodge with glorious views of Isle Ornsay’s natural harbour.

With underfloor heating powered by ground source technology to ensure maximum insulation while doing minimal harm to the planet, The Cabin has been built with sustainability in mind.

The building’s grounds are planted with native flowering shrubs and trees, and visitors can observe a myriad of birds by simply watching from the Cabin’s modern deck.

Knoydart House, Knoydart

A stunning studio room, Knoydart House is known for its gorgeous view of the nearby sea loch and eco-friendly credentials.

The studio operates via a hydro scheme, gaining energy through rainwater that collects naturally in the loch hills. Using insulation materials, a thermal heat pump and wood-burning stove, Knoydart House is kept warm and comfortable for visitors, while minimising damage to the planet.

Eco-conscious owners, Jackie and Ian, have kitted out the building with energy-efficient appliances and low-energy light bulbs to ensure that guests have the most sustainable getaway.

Environmentally friendly getaways are a great option for the eco-conscious among us. And now, you no longer need to travel hundreds of miles for the perfect eco-escape. With eco-friendly accommodation within one hour of major cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh, you have no excuse not to make your next holiday a sustainable one!
